Dentists are Dental Surgeons who are trained in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of the diseases of the teeth and mouth. They spend 5 years in the University studying and understanding the ins and outs of patients' teeth and the mouth. This would eventually lead to a degree of Bachelors in Dental Surgery BDS. Typically, the Dentist would carry out treatment like fillings, removal of teeth, root canal treatment, bridges and crowns for the repair of fractured teeth.
An Orthodontist is a Specialist Dental Surgeon who is specially trained to straighten teeth, improve the bite and align the jaws. All Specialist Orthodontists also start as Dentists acquiring experience in General Dental Practice. After 5 years of University qualification and general dental experience, they set out to train in the hospital for 2-3 years leading to the Fellowships of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons FDS. They go for further 3-year training in the hospital to specialise in Orthodontics leading to the Membership in Orthodontics of the Royal College of Surgeons M.Orth. Whilst in training, they also carry out research in the field of Orthodontics in the University leading to Master in Dental Surgery MSc.
Orthodontists therefore are a small group of experts in this field of dentistry who are highly trained and equipped and have the experience required to treat complex cases.
