Knowing the Difference Between a Dentist and an Orthodontist

Knowing the Difference Between a Dentist and an Orthodontist

In your lifetime you will only receive one set of adult teeth. Therefore, it is crucial to understand and receive the right advice on dental care and hygiene. Part of this is knowing who you need to go to for your advice and treatment.

Who is a Dentist?

Your dentist is a qualified professional, trained to treat dental diseases and other oral conditions. They are also qualified to repair and extract teeth and fit artificial teeth, to improve your oral health.

Who is an Orthodontist?

An orthodontist is a dental professional who has qualified as a dentist and then undergone further specialist training in orthodontics. Orthodontics is focused on your jaw, teeth and facial structure. During your initial orthodontic appointment, your overall facial structure will be examined to identify any teeth and jaw alignment issues.

This is completed to determine if your teeth and jaw are in the correct position, to enable you to maintain a healthy smile and proper functioning while eating and talking.  An orthodontist is qualified to determine if you require braces, explain and offer the various treatment available to you, what type of treatment is appropriate and bespoke to you and to complete the necessary treatment for you.

How Will I Know Who to Visit?

It is recommended that you visit your dentist at least once a year if you are under 18. Or, if you are over 18, it can vary from 3 months to 2 years, depending on the condition of your teeth. These routine dental check ups are encouraged to monitor your oral health and to treat early signs of dental diseases.

During your appointment, your dentist can provide advice on how to improve your oral health. For example, by making changes to your diet and cutting out bad habits, such as smoking. They may also recommend additional dental treatments if necessary, for example, fillings, crowns, a hygienist appointment or root canal treatment.

However, you visit an orthodontist when your teeth need straightening, bite need correcting or if your jaw needs aligning. After having your teeth and jaw professionally examined, your orthodontist will be able to determine the right course of treatment.

Thereafter your orthodontist appointments will involve adjusting your braces and monitoring your treatment progress.
